The idea for Web Wednesday Singapore came to us at a bar over a couple of drinks after an industry conference given by Google in the fall of 2007. We had just run into a number of ex-colleagues, friends, and digerati that we had not seen in ages- some had been absent since 2001!
Having lived through the dot com boom in Hong Kong during the late 90's and early 00's we had seen a number of online networking events come and go. However, we all realized that nothing of this sort existed in Singapore at present. We all agreed that it would be good if we could have a regular event for the digital advertising and marketing community in Singapore to get together, see old friends and meet new ones, and have casual conversations about the industry, network, and have some fun over a few drinks.
We all agreed to set it up the next day..... 4 months later we actually did and Web Wednesday Singapore 1.0 launched!
Web Wednesday Singapore was built around philosophy of getting together a bunch of digital industry veterans (and future veterans) to have a couple of drinks, network, hear a short talk about an important topic facing the industry, chat about digital issues and have some fun. These were broadly defined into the following 5 points:
This WILL NOT be:
1) a sales pitch
2) a long speech
It WILL be:
3) informal
4) interactive
5) fun
The events are put together by number of us within the digital media world and are supported quite broadly by the online marketing and advertising industry in Singapore and the region. The ideas for speakers come from an industry panel and invitations to the event are sent out by a handful of key supporters.
Web Wednesday events happen once a month on the 3rd or 4th Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm-8:30pm at a convenient watering hole.
We decided to go with the name Web Wednesday Singapore as an old acquaintance in Hong Kong (Napoleon Biggs) had just set up Web Wednesday Hong Kong in July 2007 and we thought that by using a common moniker, we might be able to share ideas, speakers and promotions. If you are up in Hong Kong on a Wednesday, check and see if he is having an event! www.webwednesday.hk
UPDATE:
For those who must know, the "We" in Web Wednesday is Andy Tu, Kevin Tan and Joe Nguyen.
